Important Update: Standing Against Bullying in Our Community

In a recent incident highlighted by AsAmNews, a Chinese American youth was bullied by older kids, bringing attention to the ongoing issues of bullying and discrimination faced by Asian Americans. The article discusses the impact of this harassment on the victim and emphasizes the need for greater awareness and action against such behavior. It serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against bullying in all forms and fostering a more inclusive community.

The Details:

A video allegedly posted by a middle schooler shows a 5-year-old Chinese American boy being taunted with racial slurs by a White middle schooler as the little boy ran to the safety of his home in Loudoun County, VA.

The parents of the preschooler say they became aware of the incident after being notified by another parent. That parent’s child saw the video on a messaging app and shared it with his parents who promptly notified the victim’s family.

The middle schooler can be heard saying “this little, short ching chong bing bong over here.”

“No, don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me” the preschooler yells as he crouches down in fear and covers his face with a blanket.

The harasser approaches his victim as he runs to the end of his family’s porch.

“Are you dingdonging and chingchonging?” the older boy asks.

“Go eat your dumplings.”

We are posting the video at the request of the 5 year old’s parents.

As a father and a Korean American who has experienced bullying firsthand, I want to take a moment to speak about the importance of educating our children early about who we are and what behaviors we will not tolerate. Growing up, I faced my share of challenges and verbal abuse, and I had to fight my way through those experiences.

It’s crucial for us to be strong role models for our children and to instill in them the idea that just because we are Korean (or Asian), we are not weak, passive, or to be messed with. We need to show our kids by example that we stand tall and proud of our heritage and capabilities.

One of the best ways to build their confidence is to get them involved in jiu jitsu or any martial arts. Not only will this teach them self-defense, but it will also empower them to stand up for themselves in difficult situations.

As a community, we have the opportunity to come together and make our environment safer for our children. Let's encourage each other to raise resilient, confident kids who know their worth and are ready to face the world.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to working together to strengthen our community!

Best regards,

Kenny Kim
